Our place in history

Since its creation in 1957 Plessey Semiconductors has been a leading innovator in the development of integrated circuits. It produced its first integrated circuit in that same year and has continued to push the boundaries up to the present day. The combination of world leading processes and creative design has yielded many novel and innovative products. The most notable developments have been:

1960’s

  • The SL600 series for radio communications products including the Clansman military radio.
  • Industry standard SL521 logarithmic amplifier, world’s first integrated high frequency amplifier.

1970’s

  • A family of high speed ECL logic, referred to as PECL Plessey emitter coupled logic.
  • SP9000 range of world’s fastest data convertors.

1980’s

  • Low voltage and low power direct conversion paging receivers.
  • CMOS and ECL gate arrays and standard cell products and development support.
  • PDSP Plessey Digital Signal Processing family of DSP devices.

1990’s

  • SL3522 first seven stage cascaded log amp.
  • Chip sets for Analogue and digital cellular covering the following standards AMPS, TACS, GSM, TDMA and CDMA
  • In 1992 1st licensee of the ARM processor
  • 1994 Plessey Semiconductors work with Apple to develop a WiFi system based on the Plessey wireless LAN chipset.
  • Highly integrated TV tuners and synthesisers for Analogue and Digital Cable, satellite and terrestrial systems.
